PreSales FAQ -> Domain Name
FAQ |
| |
|
I already own a domain name, how do I get started with
hosting? |
| All you have to do is go to our order online page
and choose the type of hosting you wish to order. During
the order process, you will be given a choice to
transfer an existing domain. Complete your order, then
just follow these easy domain transfer steps. And if you
have any problems at all with your domain transfer,
please contact our technical support staff who will be
happy to help you. You will receive your welcome email
with all the information you need to get started within
3 minutes of signing up. It's that easy! |
| ^ top |
| |
|
How do I transfer my domain name so it points to
all2host Servers?
|
| If you registered your domain name with another
registrar, then you will need to update your domain name
records to point to our name servers. We can help you
transfer your domain name at no charge, just contact us. |
| ^ top |
| |
|
How long does it take before my domain name is active? |
| Once your domain name has been registered (or
transferred, if applicable), it usually takes about 48
hours before it is active. All Internet providers must
update their records (DNS tables) to reflect the new
site's location |
| ^ top |
| |
|
What is domain
propagation? |
| When a visitor types your domain name into their Web
browser, their request is referred to a nameserver that
indicates the physical location (the IP address) of your
domain on the Internet. When your site location changes
to a new IP address, or when a new domain name is added,
nameservers around the world must be notified of the
change. This process is referred to as propagation.
Propagation normally requires 24-48 hours. During this
period, if you are transferring your domain, some
nameservers will refer to the old location of your site
and some to the new location. Therefore, a visitor
accessing your site may be directed to either the old or
new location. That's why it is best to cancel your old
provider only after the internet has propagated and all
requests to view your site are going to our servers. |
| ^ top |
| |
|
Does all2host support third level domains
(yourname.yourdomain.com)? |
| Yes. We can point any sub domain to a
directory under your main account so you only have to
edit one account. The only restriction is that you have
the main domain name (ie yourdomain.com) with us and the
sub domain has to be in the form of:
something.yourdomain.com. |
| ^ top |
| |
|
I changed my mind about the domain name that I
registered. Is it too late to change it? |
| Once you register a domain name, you cannot
"un-register" it. If you find that the domain name you
chose no longer suits your business or personal needs,
you should register another domain name. The domain name
you originally registered will continue to be registered
to you until the end of the registration period.
Registration and Domain Registration renewal fees are
non-refundable. |
| ^ top |
| |
|
Can I register a domain name if I am not ready to sign
up for hosting yet? |
| We can register your domain name and you can set up
a hosting account later. And, we will point your domain
name to our servers so that when you sign up for
hosting, your new domain name will be ready to use. (No
transfer will be necessary.) |
| ^ top |
| |
|
What extension should I use for my domain name? |
| There are many different extensions available right
now. If you are a business, we recommend a .com suffix.
It is the first extension that most people try when
searching for a site. Also, since it is one of the
oldest extensions, .com shows that your business has
been around for a while and has a well established
presence on the web. |
| ^ top |
| |
|
Should I register more than one domain name?
|
| Sometimes, it isn’t a bad idea to register several
similar domain names. If you have "yourname.com",
register "yourname.net" so no one else takes it. You can
register your full company and a shorter, easier to
remember version. Some people even register common
misspellings of their company’s name. It's a good idea
to get these misspelled domain names before your
competitor does! |
| ^ top |
| |
|
What characters can I use in my domain name? |
| Just a reminder. Domain names can only use letters,
numbers, and hyphens ("-"). Spaces and other symbols are
not allowed. Cannot begin or end with a hyphen. Domain
names are not case sensitive. Domains ending in .com,
.net, and .org domain names cannot exceed 63 characters
total. Other domain names cannot exceed 22 characters,
not including the extension. |
| ^ top |
| |
|
How much should I have to pay to register a domain name? |
| At one time, companies were able to get away with
charging reservation fees plus a "mandatory" $70
InterNIC fee. Recently, it was decided that other
companies should be able to compete to sell domain
names. This has lowered prices dramatically. To register
your domain name for just $9.99 a year, just go to our
domain names page |
| ^ top |
| |
|
What is a Sub
Domain Account?
|
A sub-domain account is an account that can be setup
to be re-directed to a sub-directory under your main
account. For example info.yourdomain.com is considered a
sub domain. The only requirement is that your main
domain name (yourdomain.com) be hosted on our servers.
Sub-domains count as an additional domain/website on
your account and can be set up through your Plesk
control panel. |

Domain Name FAQ |
| |
|
What is the: Domain
Name ? |
| The unique name that identifies an Internet site.
Domain Names always have 2 or more parts, separated by
dots. The part on the left is the most specific, and the
part on the right is the most general. A given machine
may have more than one Domain Name but a given Domain
Name points to only one machine. For example, the domain
names: example.net mail.example.net whatever.example.net
can all refer to the same machine, but each domain name
can refer to no more than one machine. Usually, all of
the machines on a given Network will have the same thing
as the right-hand portion of their Domain Names (example.net
in the examples above). It is also possible for a Domain
Name to exist but not be connected to an actual machine.
This is often done so that a group or business can have
an Internet e-mail address without having to establish a
real Internet site. In these cases, some real Internet
machine must handle the mail on behalf of the listed
Domain Name
Because the Internet is based on IP addresses, not
domain names, every Web server requires a Domain Name
System (DNS) server to translate domain names into IP
addresses.
To register a domain name, you can contact a company
(such as Network Solutions, Inc.) or you can ask your
ISP or hosting company to register names for you. In
addition to the suffixes listed above, there is also .edu,
.gov, .mil, and the list of country codes, as well as
the following:
Every domain name has a suffix that indicates which
top level domain (TLD) it belongs to. There are only a
limited number of such domains. The primary top level
domains are:
- .com - Companies
- .net - Internet Service Providers
- .edu - Educational Institutions
- .mil - Military
- .org - Non-profit organizations
- .gov - Government i.biz - Business
and some other.
Country codes:
- .co.uk - British
- .es - Spanish
- .ru - Russian
etc. |

| |
|
When I register a domain name, who will have ownership
of it? |
| When you register a domain name with all2host, you
will have full ownership of your domain name. This means
that you can move your domain name somewhere else or
modify it however you want. You have full control over
your domain name. |

| |
|
What is the:
Parking Domain Name ? |
| When someone registers a domain name, does not
develop it into a Web site, but just sits on it (and
keeps paying the annual fees), the domain is said to be
"parked". In the Web hosting business, domain name
parking is a service that a Web hosting company will
offer to its clients as a way of securing a domain name
for future use. The Web host registers the domain name
with the InterNIC and "parks" the domain name on a
server until it is ready to be made active. By doing
this, the Web host ensures the availability of the
domain name for the client's future use so that another
individual or company cannot register that same domain
name. parking a domain name alone will result in no
service (webhosting, e-mail) for that particular domain
name. |
| ^ top |
| |
|
What is
the: Register Domain Name ? |
| Registration of a domain name is the formal and
official recording of a domain name along with its
authorized contacts and DNS server information. Through
registration, the registrant becomes the de-facto
"owner" of the name, with full rights and authority
concerning its uses so long as all obligations, such as
registration and renewal fees, are met. The Internet
domain name system (DNS) consists of a directory,
organized hierarchically, of all the domain names and
their corresponding computers registered to particular
companies and persons. When you register a domain name,
it will be associated with the computer on the Internet
you designate during the period the registration is in
effect. From that computer, you can create a website
which will be accessible to Internet users around the
world. When a domain is registered with the appropriate
registry, that domain is assigned and becomes no longer
available for anyone else to use. Typically, there are
registration and renewal fees (local registry fees)
associated with the right to use a domain. However,
there are some TLDs that are provided at no charge.
Domain names can be registered through many different
companies (known as "registrars") that compete with one
another (a listing of these companies can be found on
www.networksolutions.com website). The registrar you
choose will ask you to provide various contact and
technical information that makes up the registration.
The registrar will then keep records of the contact
information and submit the technical information to a
central directory known as the "registry." This registry
provides other computers on the Internet the information
necessary to send you e-mail or to find your web site.
You will also be required to enter a registration
contract with the registrar, which sets forth the terms
under which your registration is accepted and will be
maintained. |
| ^ top |
| |
|
Will I be able to access my domain name with or
without the WWW?
|
| Yes, you will be able to access the domain name with
or without the WWW in front. For example, you could
access the domain name "mydomain.com" by going to "www.mydomain.com"
as well as "mydomain.com". |

Hosting FAQ |
| |
|
What is the: Hosting ? |
| The business of providing the equipment and services
required to host and maintain files for one or more Web
sites and to provide fast Internet connections to those
sites. Most hosting is "shared," which means that Web
sites of multiple companies are on the same server in
order to share costs. Virtual hosting means that
services will be transparent (so that each site has its
own domain name and e-mail addresses). Dedicated hosting
means that the Web hosting company provides all of the
equipment and assumes all of the responsibility for
technical support and maintenance of a Web site. |
| ^ top |
| |
|
Can I host adult
material? |

|
What is the: Bandwidth
? |
| The technical definition involves the difference
between two frequencies and the amount of information
that can flow through a channel as expressed in cycles
per second (hertz). It also refers to the range of
frequencies (not the speed) or the measured amount of
information that can be transmitted over a connection:
the higher the frequency, the higher the bandwidth and
the greater the capacity of a channel to carry
information. For a digital channel, bandwidth is defined
in bits per second (bps). For an analog channel, it is
dependent on the type and method of modulation used to
encode the data. Broadcast TV channels, for example, all
have the same bandwidth, by FCC rule.
You may hear bandwidth described as the amount of
time it takes a Web page to fully load (although this is
incorrect) or as the amount of traffic on a Web site
(this is also incorrect, but widely used). Internet
users refer to larger graphics as "bandwidth hogs"
(because they take up so much room and download so
slowly). |
